Don’t buy a magic checkout. Measure abandonment and errors by step, payment method, and device; then cut friction. B2B LatAm checklist + Mercado Pago news.

Every week someone asks for a "faster **checkout**" or "fewer fields." Fair: checkout is the store's payment flow —where someone goes from cart to paying— and **conversion** is the share who complete the purchase. But redesigning blind often moves the pain; it doesn't remove it.

This week [Valor Economico](https://valor.globo.com/financas/noticia/2026/09/24/mercado-pago-lana-ferramenta-para-acelerar-pagamentos-em-sites-de-grandes-varejistas.ghtml) (Brazil, 24 Sep 2026) reported that Mercado Pago is launching **"pagamentos rapido**s," a tool to speed up payment on large retailers' sites. Per what the company told the outlet, during a test period sellers saw an average rise of** 12 percentage point**s in approval rate and** 15 percentage point**s in conversion. Solid industry hook. Not, by itself, your work plan.

## What Mercado Pago announced (and how to cite it)

The headline and summary are clear: the tool targets large retailers, aims to **reduce friction** in checkout, and Mercado Pago attributes those +12 pp / +15 pp to tests with the tool. The full body may sit behind a paywall; we cite only what is verifiable in [Valor](https://valor.globo.com/financas/noticia/2026/09/24/mercado-pago-lana-ferramenta-para-acelerar-pagamentos-em-sites-de-grandes-varejistas.ghtml)'s public dispatch.

For a LatAm owner or ops lead, the useful question isn't "do we copy Mercado Pago's pitch?" It's:** do we know where people drop off in our checkout**? Without that map, any "fast payment" or redesign is a bet.

## Measure first; then remove friction

At Somos Gente Digital we don't sell "magic checkout." We se**ll diagnosis + concrete chan**ges: look at abandonment and errors by step, payment method, and device; then cut fields, steps, or rules that don't earn their keep. Polishing only t**he** UI (interface: what you see — buttons, fields, map, pin, screens) without t**he** UX (how the payment flow feels and whether people understand it) isn't enough.

We've seen it on the agency floor: the idea itself was sound — a map with a pin that stores coordinates. The UI was strong; the UX wasn't: the client wasn't ready for that complexity yet. It created friction and we had to roll it back. Not a "bad" feature: good UI at the wrong maturity. Measuring that beats stacking more features.

If you already launched and the pain is sync, keys, and month-to-month upkeep, that's another arc [(ownership / retaine](/en-us/blog/ownership-retainer-plataformas-ecommerce)r). Here the focus is the payment funnel:** measure before you redesig**n.

## B2B LatAm checklist

For owners and ops on Shopify, Woo, BigCommerce, Webflow, or similar:

1. **Abandonment by step:** which screen do they leave —details, shipping, payment, confirmation?
1. **Errors by payment method:** card, PSE, Pix, cash on delivery, wallet — which fails most, and with what message?
1. **Device:** mobile vs desktop? In LatAm mobile is often the majority; a "perfect" desktop checkout can die on the phone.
1. **Fields that don't earn their place:** every extra input is a chance to abandon. Do you need tax ID, a second phone, or a map+pin now — or is the business not ready yet?
1. **Mobile first:** keyboard, autofill, buttons, gateway load time.
1. **Failed-attempt recovery:** if payment fails, can they retry without retyping everything? Is there a sensible abandoned-cart email or WhatsApp?
1. **One hypothesis, one change:** remove one field or step, measure again. Don't rebuild the whole flow "because Mercado Pago said 15 pp."

## FAQ

### What is checkout?

The store's payment process: from cart until payment confirms (or fails). It includes details, shipping, payment method, and error screens.

### What is conversion here?

The share of people who, entering checkout (or the funnel you define), complete the purchase. Raising conversion without seeing where they drop is makeup.

### Is this anti-Mercado Pago?

No. If "pagamentos rapidos" or a gateway truly removes friction for you, use it. Don't confuse a vendor announcement with a diagnosis of your store.

### Is this the same as ownership / retainer?

No; [that post](/en-us/blog/ownership-retainer-plataformas-ecommerce) is about keys and upkeep after launch; this one is about the payment funnel.

### Will a "magic" checkout redesign fix conversion?

Almost never. Without measuring by step / method / device, you change the facade and abandonment just moves. SGD sells diagnosis and concrete changes, not magic.

### Should we always remove maps or "powerful" functions?

Not always. Sometimes the UI is strong and the UX isn't: the idea is good and the business isn't ready yet. Measuring friction (and knowing when to roll back) beats paying for the same mistake twice.

### Is overall conversion rate enough?

It's a thermometer. The useful map is the breakdown: step, method, device, and gateway errors. That's where cheap changes show up.
